FG aims to make Nigeria global leader in responsible media – Information Minister

The Federal Government is taking concrete steps to position Nigeria as a global leader in responsible media and digital information usage, according to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris.

Speaking in Abuja on June 17 at the launch of a book by the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) titled “Nigeria Media Renaissance: GOCOP Perspectives on Online Publishing,” the minister revealed that Nigeria is on track to inaugurate a UNESCO Category 2 Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Institute by November.

Chairing the event, which also served as a fundraiser for the proposed GOCOP Media Centre, Alhaji Idris encouraged GOCOP to actively engage with the MIL Institute for both its academic and practical benefits. He noted that the initiative would enhance fact-checking capabilities and improve media standards across the country.

The minister underscored the Tinubu administration’s commitment to democratic governance that delivers real benefits to citizens through systemic reforms, infrastructure investments, and improved social services.

He commended the role of online media in strengthening democracy, acting as information gatekeepers, and influencing public discourse. Emphasizing the need for truth, accountability, and responsible journalism, Alhaji Idris reaffirmed the Federal Government’s support for a free, ethical, and dynamic press.

The government, he added, will partner with GOCOP to elevate journalistic standards, promote media literacy, and improve public communication — telling Nigeria’s story in a way that fosters hope and drives national progress.
