Fayose Backs Suspension of Damagun, Endorses Abdurrahman as New PDP Chairman
Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has thrown his weight behind the suspension of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Umar Damagun, expressing confidence that his removal will follow the same path as that of his predecessor, Senator Iyorchia Ayu.
Fayose, who spoke on Sunday in Ado Ekiti, said Damagun lacked the capacity to lead the PDP, describing his emergence as “manipulated” and detrimental to the party’s progress.
“You will recall that this is exactly how the Ayu crisis began. Damagun will go the same way. He has served his last day as chairman because he was never supposed to be in that position in the first place,” Fayose stated.
He congratulated the newly appointed acting national chairman, Alhaji Mohammed Abdurrahman, saying his emergence reflected the will of the party members following Damagun’s suspension.
“Damagun only occupied the position temporarily and later manipulated the process to hold onto power, creating unnecessary confusion that stalled key meetings like the NEC. We are happy that Abdurrahman has now taken charge,” he said.
Fayose urged the new leadership to focus on rebuilding the party, reconciling aggrieved members, and preparing for the next convention.
“I want to assure the new acting chairman of our total support. The party needs a unifying leader at this time, and I believe Abdurrahman will be affirmed by the courts because the suspension followed due process,” he added.
Commenting on internal disputes within the PDP’s South West zone, Fayose accused some party leaders of violating the constitution.
“In the South West, a certain governor wants to control all state chapters without allowing proper congresses to take place, and yet they claim to want peace. That cannot work,” he said.
