Eguavoen: Super Eagles Must Improve Defensively In Russia

Former Super Eagles captain and coach Austin Eguavoen insists the team must shore up their defence although he is upbeat about the team’s chances at the Russia 2018 World Cup, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Eguavoen advised coach Gernot Rohr to make changes to the team’s training methods.
“I think the coach has seen the two games against England and Czech Republic. It’s time to work on it, probably change the way of training and adopt a new system of defending,” Eguavoen, who represented Nigeria at the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, told CSN.
“In football you don’t defend with only four players, you defend with the entire team, including the goalkeeper, because if you leave the faults to the defenders only,  you are making a big mistake in professional football.
“As for me, I still have faith in the team, it’s not enough to start saying the team is not good because they lost the last two games.
“Mistakes are allowed in football, it’s better they make errors now and work on it, than to make mistakes when the World Cup comes up.”
The Super Eagles lost back-to-back friendly matches against England and Czech Republic on 2 June and 6 June. They open their World Cup campaign on Saturday against Croatia.
