Breaking: Egbetokun Out, Disu In as Tinubu Restructures Police Leadership
President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun from his position as Inspector General of Police, according to confirmations from senior police officials and sources within the Police Service Commission.
Tunji Disu, who currently serves as Assistant Inspector General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, has been appointed as his successor.
A source disclosed that Egbetokun had been summoned to the Presidential Villa, where he was directed to begin preparations for his handover. “He has likely completed his handover notes and will formally transfer duties to Tunji Disu,” the source said.
The source also criticised Egbetokun’s tenure, describing it as controversial and marked by several allegations. It was further revealed that the President advised him to step aside and focus on addressing kidney-related health concerns.
The decision has reportedly been welcomed by many within the police force. According to insiders, officers reacted positively when news of his removal emerged on Monday. While there were indications that the First Lady, Remi Tinubu, preferred his retention, the President was said to have remained firm in his decision.
Egbetokun’s tenure faced sustained scrutiny, particularly over his continued stay in office beyond the statutory retirement age, raising concerns about compliance with police service rules. His leadership was also dogged by allegations of favoritism and questionable promotions involving close associates.
Additional controversy stemmed from claims linking ₦100 million from Anambra State’s security vote to his son, Victor, prompting public criticism and legal actions by police authorities against journalists and activists who reported on the matter.
