Ebola Outbreak May Force Postponement Of 2027 Elections – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has warned that the 2027 general elections could be postponed if the ongoing Ebola outbreak spreads widely across the country.

NCDC Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, gave the indication during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, while discussing the potential implications of the outbreak for Nigeria’s preparations for the elections.

Idris, however, stressed that there was no immediate need to postpone the polls, expressing hope that the disease would be contained before it reached a level that could disrupt the electoral process.

“We hope the election will not be postponed, but if the thing gets wide enough, that might be considered. As at now, there is no need for that,” he said.

The NCDC chief also cautioned against politicising the outbreak, insisting that public health concerns should not be used as a political weapon.

“We in the health sector did not use disease issues as a political weapon,” Idris said.

Nigeria is preparing for the 2027 general elections amid concerns over the confirmed case of Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The patient is receiving medical care under isolation, while health authorities have intensified contact tracing, surveillance and infection-prevention measures to prevent further transmission.

According to the NCDC, the immediate priority is to identify and monitor people who may have been exposed to the virus, strengthen preparedness in healthcare facilities and prevent additional infections.

The agency has also urged Nigerians to cooperate with public health officials, provide accurate information during contact tracing and avoid spreading unverified information about the outbreak.

The current Ebola outbreak originated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and has spread to other African countries, prompting increased surveillance and coordinated responses by national and international health authorities.

The 2027 elections are scheduled to begin with presidential and National Assembly elections on January 16, followed by governorship and state assembly elections on February 6.

Although the NCDC has raised the possibility of postponement if the outbreak becomes widespread, no change to the election timetable has been announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

For now, the health authorities say their priority remains containing the outbreak and preventing further transmission.
