DSS Confirms Detention of One Zainab Sodiq Over Alleged Unauthorized Drone Possession

….Begins Investigation

The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed the detention of one Zainab Sodiq over alleged possession of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, without the required authorization.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Deputy Director, Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Favour Dozie, Sodiq was intercepted on July 6, 2026, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, by officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Aviation Security (AVSEC) and DSS operatives while attempting to board a flight to Abuja.

The Service said the suspect was found in possession of a drone but could not produce an End User Certificate (EUC), a mandatory document required under existing regulations governing the acquisition and operation of remotely piloted aircraft systems in Nigeria.

The DSS explained that the interception was carried out in line with extant regulations issued by the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), which restrict the acquisition and use of drones due to national security concerns.

According to the statement, Sodiq admitted during questioning that she did not possess the required authorization documents.

The Service, however, said she was allowed to proceed on her scheduled flight to Abuja because of a prior engagement but was directed to report to the DSS National Headquarters on Wednesday, July 8, for the continuation of investigations.

The DSS noted that it has commenced a full investigation into the matter, stressing that the NSA regulations empower the Service to impound and sanction individuals or corporate entities operating drones anywhere in the country without proper authorization.

It said the enforcement action was necessary in view of growing global and domestic security concerns surrounding the use of drones, including privacy violations and threats to public safety.

The DSS reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, due process and strict adherence to the rule of law in the discharge of its responsibilities.
