Disu Clears Major Hurdle, Set for Senate Confirmation as IGP

The National Police Council has confirmed Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police, paving the way for his nomination to be forwarded to the Senate for screening and confirmation.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier appointed Disu as acting IGP on February 25, 2026, following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

In a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President indicated that the Police Council would meet to formally consider Disu’s elevation before transmitting his name to the Senate.

Disu, a former Assistant Inspector-General of Police, assumed office as acting IGP last Wednesday after being decorated by President Tinubu at a brief ceremony in Abuja.

The 59-year-old officer took over leadership of the Nigeria Police Force at the Louis Edet House headquarters shortly after his appointment.

Before his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, and was promoted to the AIG rank in 2025.

His confirmation by the Police Council marks a key step in finalising his appointment as Nigeria’s top police officer, pending Senate approval.
