Dangote Refinery launches major initiative to distribute Petrol

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has launched a major initiative to distribute Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and diesel to marketers, fuel dealers, manufacturers, telecom operators, the aviation industry, and other large-scale users across Nigeria.

As part of this effort, the refinery is offering free logistics support to streamline distribution, with the potential to lower fuel prices, reduce inflation, and create employment opportunities.

Experts believe the refinery’s plan to deploy 4,000 brand-new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tankers could also break the monopoly of intermediaries and promote environmental sustainability.

Dr. Abimbola Oyarinu, a university lecturer and public affairs analyst, noted that if effectively implemented, the initiative could significantly weaken the influence of middlemen in the oil distribution chain. He highlighted how tanker drivers and other intermediaries have previously disrupted fuel supply and held the nation hostage. According to him, this move could help the Dangote Refinery bypass those bottlenecks.

However, Dr. Oyarinu emphasized that the ultimate test will be how the policy affects fuel prices and inflation.
“It has the potential to dismantle the grip of powerful middlemen, including tanker drivers who have historically challenged even the NNPCL. But what really matters to Nigerians is how it impacts them directly. If pump prices drop, inflation may also ease, as fuel prices and the exchange rate are two of the biggest inflation drivers in Nigeria,” he said.

Analyst Ibukun Phillips called the move a “revolution” that could reshape Nigeria’s energy sector and improve fuel access nationwide.
“The benefits are substantial. Logistics make up 10% to 30% of fuel prices. Removing that cost could significantly reduce pump prices,” she explained. “It will also enhance fuel availability in rural and underserved areas, where residents often pay more despite lower incomes. This initiative could revive idle filling stations in those communities and deliver wide-reaching benefits.”

Phillips also pointed out the job creation potential, noting that the Dangote Refinery is expected to recruit at least 8,000 drivers to support the project.
