Court restrains Senate from probing Natasha

A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order restraining the Senate Committee on Ethics from proceeding with disciplinary actions against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

This decision was made by Justice Obiora Egwuatu, who granted an interim injunction to halt the Senate’s probe into the matter, pending further legal proceedings.

The controversy surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s conduct at the Senate, including her accusations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, led to her invitation for a hearing scheduled for today, March 5.

However, with this court order, the hearing has been put on hold.

Analysts are now questioning whether the court has the authority to restrain the legislature in this manner.

The defendants, including the Clerk to the National Assembly and the Committee on Ethics, have been ordered to show cause within 72 hours why an interlocutory injunction to stop the hearing should not be granted.
