Breaking: Court Remands Sowore in Kuje Prison Over Bail Revocation

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the determination of his application challenging the revocation of his bail.

Justice Mohammed Umar gave the order on Monday after Sowore appeared before the court through his new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, who filed a motion seeking a stay of execution of the order revoking his bail and the bench warrant earlier issued against him.

In a brief ruling, Justice Umar directed that the defendant remain in custody until the court hears and determines the application. The matter was subsequently adjourned until June 24 for the hearing of the motion.

The court had on June 16 revoked Sowore’s bail and issued a warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear in court for the continuation of his trial, where he was expected to open his defence.

Sowore had previously chosen to represent himself after members of his legal team withdrew from the case.

Meanwhile, Justice Umar also dismissed a separate motion seeking his disqualification from further handling the trial. The application had alleged judicial bias, but the court ruled against the request and reaffirmed its authority to continue presiding over the matter.

The latest development marks another twist in the ongoing legal proceedings involving the AAC chieftain, with the court set to decide on his application for a stay of execution at the next adjourned date.
