Breaking: Court Awards N100m Damages to DSS Officers in Defamation Suit Against SERAP
A court has awarded ₦100 million in damages to two officers of the Department of State Services (DSS) who filed a lawsuit against the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) over allegations they described as defamatory.
The officers had approached the court to challenge claims made by SERAP, arguing that the statements harmed their reputation and professional standing. They sought redress and compensation for damages caused.
In its ruling, the court found in favour of the DSS operatives, holding that the claims made against them were not sufficiently substantiated. The judge consequently ordered SERAP to pay ₦100 million as damages to the plaintiffs.
The judgment marks a significant development in the case, highlighting the legal consequences of unverified allegations and reinforcing the importance of accountability in public advocacy.
Reacting to the verdict, legal analysts say the decision could have broader implications for civil society organisations, particularly in how allegations against public officials are presented and pursued.
