CONTINUOUS DIALOGUE  WITH  NIGER  DELTA  STAKEHOLDERS TO  BE SUSTAINED  FOR  SECURITY,PEACE  AND  DEVELOPMENT  OF  THE  REGION-FG

The  Federal  Government  has  reiterated  its  determination  to engage   Niger  Delta  stakeholders    through   continuous  dialogues for  sustained  security, peace  and  development  of  the  NigerDelta  region  and  the  country.

The  Minister  of  State  in  the  Ministry  of  Niger  Delta Affairs, Prof. Claudius Omoleye  Daramola who  was  represented  by the  Director  of  Press  in  the  Ministry, Mr. Marshall  Gundu gave the  assurance  at  a  one-  day  peace, security enlightenment  town hall  meeting  and  community  health  outreach  programme  at
Eyekogba  village  in  Oredo Local  Government  Area  of  Edo  State.

In  the  words  of  the  minister: ‘’This  initiative  is specifically  designed  to  enlighten  the  populace  on  government programmes,  projects  and  policies  geared  towards  securing  and developing  the  Niger Delta  region  on  a  sustainable  basis.  It also  serves  as  a  feedback  mechanism  for  the  ministry  and  our
key  stakeholders.”

Prof. Daramola  also  added  that  the  dialogue  strategy  has  the capability  to mitigate  some  hydra-headed  agitations  that  keep re-occurring  in  some communities  within  the  region.
The  minister  said  that  the  goal  of  government  was  to  create a  conducive  atmosphere  for  investments, stability  and socio-economic  well-being  of  the  Niger Delta  region.

The  minister  enjoined   all  stakeholders  to  collaborate  with the  Federal   and  State  Governments  by  building  the  needed synergy  and  partnership  to  promote  the  socio-economic development  as  well  as  sustainable  peace, development  and stability  of  the  Niger  Delta  region.

Speaking  earlier  at  the  event, the  Permanent  Secretary  in  the Ministry  of  Niger  Delta  Affairs, Aminu  Aliyu  Bisalla  who  was represented  by  the  Mrs. Laureen Braide, the  Director  Community Development  and Education  Department  said  the  programme  was organized  to  relate  with  the  oil  producing  communities  in  the
Niger  Delta  region  and  expressed  hope  that  there  would  be fruitful  deliberations.

While  flagging  off  the  health  outreach  segment  at  the stakeholders  forum, Prof. Daramola  said  that  the  essence  was  to foster  behavioural  change,  reduce  stigma  and  improve  access to  quality  care  and  support  services  for  persons  living  with
HIV/AIDS; promote  integrated  approach  to  the  control  of communicable  diseases  such  as  Lassa  and  Monkey Pox  Fever  with a  view  to  improving  life  expectancy  and  quality  life  for  our people in  the  region.

Free  medical  tests  were  carried  out  for  participants, free drugs  and  treated  mosquito  nets  were  given  out  to participants  at  the  health  outreach  programme  during  the stakeholders  forum  by  Doctors  and  medical  personnel.

At  the  health  outreach  segment  of  the  programme ,Dr. Andrew Fiateide  encouraged  the  people  of  the  Niger  Delta  region  to guide  against  communicable  diseases  by  keeping  their environments  clean  and  washing  their  hands  regularly.

Dr. Fiateide  also  urged  the  people  to  cover  their  food properly  to  keep  away  rodents  and  other  virus  bearing  insects that  could  cause  diseases.

The  Doctor  also  advised  people  of  the  region  to  be  sleeping inside  treated  mosquito nets,  treat  their  water  before  drinking to  avoid  malaria  and  typhoid  fever.

In  his  remarks at  the  event  Uche Ifukor , the   Lead  Speaker, said  that  security   was  everybody’s  responsibility.  He  urged all  community  leaders  and  youths  to  work  together  with government  to  ensure  peace  and  stability  in  the  Niger Delta
region.

Mr. ifukor  added  that  without  peace  it  would  be  difficult  for government  to  develop  the  region.

Speaking  at  the  event,  the  Assistant  Commissioner  of  Police in  charge  of  operations  at  the  Edo  State  Police  Command, Mr. Ayo  Famiyan   advised  communities  to  always  report  cases  of crimes  to  the  Nigeria  Police Force.

Mr.  Famiyan added  that  if  the  communities  were  not  satisfied with  the actions  of  the  police  at  any  jurisdiction  in  the state  they  should  report  the  case  at  the  next  higher  level for  necessary  action.

He  assured  the  stakeholders  that  the  Edo  State  Commissioner of  Police  was  accessible  and  would  quickly  respond  to complaints  by  community  leaders.

At  the  event, Mrs. Victoria  Potoki,  one  of  the  women  group leaders  stressed  the  need  for  the  Federal  Government  to follow-up  on  the  promises  made  during  the  visit  of  Vice President  Yemi  Osibanjo  to  Edo  State  last  year.

Mrs. Potoki  also  added  that  Niger Deltan  women  were  having difficulties  in  farming  and  fishing  due  to  oil  spills.

The  host  community  leader, Mr.Ayeni  Victor  commended  the efforts  of  the  Ministry  of  Niger  Delta  Affairs  for  organizing the  event  and  hoped  that  it  would  bring   the  needed  change and  development  to  the  community  and  the  Niger  Delta  region.

The  consultative  stakeholders  forum  was  attended  by participants  from  the  Federal  and  Edo  State Government Agencies,  traditional  rulers,  community  leaders  and  their members  and  Non-Governmental  agencies.
