CBN policy of 7% withdrawal charges on customers will encourage robbery- NANS

ABIODUN JIMOH, ABEOKUTA

Worried at the recent crime rate across the country, the National Association of Nigerian Students, (NANS) has condemned the new policy of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) charging  7% on withdrawals above N500,000 by bank customers.

This was stated in release signed by the NANS National Public Relations Officer, Azeez Adeyemi and made available to newsmen in Abeokuta, whereby various national issues were tabled as Nigeria celebrates her 59 years Independence Day anniversary on October 1st.

The release emphasised that if the policy is allowed to scaled through, many people would resort to keeping their money at homes as an alternative, but would lead to increase in robbery cases nationwide.

Also, they perceiveed that the policy was geared toward impoverishing both average and poor Nigerians, which would hitherto bring untold hardship on the masses.

In another development, the Association expressed worrisome on relocation of officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to their various campuses in search of cyber criminals, but that this act would no longer be accepted, due to incessant molestation and harassment of students by the officers.

“Our attention has been called to relocation of the officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  to our campuses in search of cyber criminals, this we did not stand against, but it will be more productive if that same attention can be channeled to our politicians who have looted this country in a larger scale.

“Under the disguise of fighting yahoo boys, many of our students have been harassed, humiliated and embarrassed for no just reason, this act we will no more be accepted going forward from now.”

Moreover, “It is has been often asserted by knowledgeable authorities that routine evaluation and constructive criticism makes an organisation, institutions or nation better, it is on this premise that National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) find it exceedingly important to make our views known on critical issues on national concern.

“In the spirit of this 59 years  celebration, our noble organisation, NANS rejoice with President  Muhammadu Buhari GCFR and indeed all Nigerians, we as well recognises the sacrifices of our forefathers who made our independence as a nation a reality.

“The uncompromise commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari in fighting corruption has given a face lift to Nigerian in the eye of developed nations around the world. but, there is a need to pay good attention to our economy.

“We appeal that a step should be taken further by ensuring that all our top government functionaries including the President are banned from foreign medical tourism, and should be treated here in Nigeria no matter the nature of their ailment, so as to improve the standard of our medical facilities in the country.

“We use this opportunity to express our loyalty to the Vice President as he is clearly a major standing factor for which many are still respecting this government. For his giant strides especially at the times when the President is out of the country, we pass our vote of confidence on his Excellency, Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and we remain firm with him against any odd.

“The Association gives kudos to Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for taken giant strides to procure 100 patrol vans and 200 motorcycles for security agencies with a view of achieving a crime free state. Also, for his quick intervention in some tertiary institutions that were undergoing challenges before his assumption of office.

“We also appreciate Oyo state Governor, Seyi Makinde, and Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for appointing youths as members of their cabinet. We equally thank the Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila for appointing a former NANS president as a legislative aide and we pray that he shall live up to expectation,” the release stated.
