CAREERS CONSULTANT PROFERS SOLUTION TOWARDS REVAMPING EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM
A Careers Consultant on Skills Development Sam Abayomi Soyombo has recommended way forward for Nigeria to revamp it’s educational system.
The Scotland based Nigerian said for Nigeria to improve the obvious index of multiple deprivation in our education system was to adapt our tiered education system to cater for range of learning abilities.
Soyombo in an interview with Dailydispash added further that, the primary should focus on development of basic literary, numeracy and IT skills,which should be compulsory.
‘Our JSS focus should enhance development of basic life skills such as social interaction, civic and personal responsibilities, introduction to skills awareness, development and pathways into employability. This should be compulsory with a sustainable destinations plan when exiting’,the consultant stated.
In the same vein,he posited that the Senior Secondary Schools, SSS should focus on academic and vocational attainment and school could become specialised or comprehensive here.
‘There should be a flexible approach to learning at this stage. Options should include: lntroductory Apprenticeships where pupils can pursue vocational training within and outside the school and take key subjects such as English, Mathematic s and IT;
Introduction to academic courses such as Social Studies, Sciences, Business and Management’;
The consultanted also noted that,additional support for pupils that have been recognised struggling with learning due to mental or physical disabilities focussing them on independent living skills.
‘At the end of SSS each pupil should be progressing to their choice destination including: Modernised Apprenticeships, Universities, Employment; Self-employed; Joint Ventures; Business and Innovation incubation schemes and Further Education for those with additional support needs.
‘This focussed tiered will involve government agencies looking into: legislation and curriculum for range of apprenticeships; labour market intelligences; Qualifications Standards; Corporations and Businesses commitment to engaging with young people; Additional Support Needs’.
Soyombo emphasised that,education system that caters for individual learning abilities will ensure that their citizen are given the opportunity to function in the best environment enabling them to maximise their potentials and enhancing the state or country productivity.
