Buratai task military on constitutional responsibilities

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, has tasked the military on constitutional responsibilities.

He gave the charge at the maiden  transformational Workshop organized for mid- level officers and Soldiers, in Abuja, on Tuesday.

In his address of welcome, the COAS said “professional capacity is not  sufficient condition to succeed in a task ,but willingness to perform the task is equally necessary”

The Chief of Army Staff said; “This workshop, as part of the chief of army staff (COAS)efforts to have a professionally responsive Nigeria Army in the discharge of our constitutional roles, is designed to foster a very critical, though intangible attribute of every Service personnel (that is): the ‘will’ to perform assigned tasks. The willingness of any Service personnel to perform assigned tasks is easily observable in his attitude, zeal and sense of duty. It essentially derives from the level of value he has for his nation, his group and others who directly or indirectly benefit from his service” he explained.

He further stated that th workshop will expose participants to a number of things in Nigeria that they can take pride in, thus clarifying the imperatives of patriotic citizenship and national loyalty even in the face of globalization and emerging technologies (fourth industrial revolution). It will interrogate the understanding of service, sacrifice and honour among the participants and provide them with worthy examples to emulate.

“Furthermore, it will work out ways to institutionalize mentorship as a framework for raising leaders as well as the environment/tools necessary for mentorship in the Nigeria Army. The workshop will aim to highlight the values of communal dependency, communal surveillance and communal enforcement, as against the dangers of individualism and sycophancy, eye-service, among  military professionals” he noted.

” As can be seen in the programme of events, this workshop is anchored   on 5 topics. There will be frank talks by some national and military transformational leaders on the first 2 topics, and expert lectures on 3 others. There would be both plenary and syndicate group discussions on each topic. Participants would also be exposed to some documentaries and videos as appropriate.

“Individual/group assignments would be used to maintain participants focus on the workshop. Each participant’s performance in the assignments will be held as a record to be used for our subsequent mentoring activities. Participants’ will be enrolled in, and taught how to use the AHQ DATI Knowledge Management System (KMS). The KMS is an e-learning platform that my department has established to enable us continue mentoring the participants of this workshop through the provision of online reading materials, videos and evaluations.

“The platform will be used to perpetuate and propagate highly cherished values and leadership examples of the COAS and other Nigeria Army  heroes to future generations of Nigeria Army  leaders for positive transformation of the Nigeria Army. The DATI KMS is the pilot of e-learning platform projects that my department intends to deploy for all Nigeria Army training schools.” He emphasised.

” We plan to also conduct this workshop in Kaduna, Ibadan, Port Harcourt, Maiduguri and Enugu. I, therefore, sincerely request anyone that may observe ways in which we can continuously improve it to please oblige us with suggestions.
