Bishop Adesanya-Davies Laments Abduction of Scripture Union Nigeria Director, Seven Others

Former Presidential Candidate, clergywoman and peace advocate, Bishop Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, has expressed deep concern over the reported abduction of the General Director of Scripture Union Nigeria, Engr. Uwem Cosmos, and seven other members of the Christian organisation following a national conference in Imo State.

The victims were reportedly travelling back to Ibadan, the national headquarters of Scripture Union Nigeria, after attending the Scripture Union Campus Fellowship National Conference at Camp of Faith, Okigwe, when contact with their vehicle was lost along the Imo–Anambra border axis.

Among those reportedly affected is Miss Tomisin Abolarin, National Secretary of Scripture Union Student Fellowship Nigeria.

In a statement issued from Port Harcourt through her media office, Bishop Adesanya-Davies described the incident as painful and disturbing, noting that the victims had gathered for Christian fellowship, spiritual growth, mentorship and youth development.

“The Scripture Union is the origin of the rest of us; as such, this attack is significant—it is crossing the line,” she said.

She added that the development was deeply troubling and had touched the hearts of peace-loving Nigerians.

“It is painful that citizens travelling after a faith-based gathering should become subjects of fear and uncertainty. Our prayers and thoughts remain with the affected families and the entire Scripture Union community,” she stated.

The cleric further noted that the recurring insecurity on highways and within communities across the country requires renewed commitment and coordinated action from all stakeholders.

She urged security agencies to intensify efforts aimed at securing the safe return of the abducted individuals.

Bishop Adesanya-Davies also appealed to Christian leaders and churches across the country to remain united in prayer, while calling on government authorities to strengthen security measures for travellers and religious gatherings.

She encouraged community stakeholders to support lawful rescue and intelligence operations and advised citizens to avoid speculation, urging them instead to rely on verified information while rescue efforts continue.

Addressing members of Scripture Union Nigeria and the wider Christian community, she urged them not to lose hope despite the uncertainty surrounding the incident.

“In moments of uncertainty, faith, compassion, lawful action and national unity remain essential. We pray for divine protection over every person involved and wisdom for those coordinating rescue efforts,” she said.

The former presidential candidate concluded by calling for a renewed national commitment to protecting lives and creating a safer environment for students, faith-based organisations and all Nigerians.

“May God comfort anxious hearts, strengthen the families, guide security personnel, and grant safe restoration for all those affected,” she added.
