Biafra: Court to rule on Nnamdi Kanu’s release on Friday

An Abuja Federal High Court, on Monday said that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, will know, on March 24, whether or not he would be released on bail pending his trial.

Justice Binta Nyako gave the ruling after Kanu’s counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, argued that all the allegations the federal government leveled against his client and three other pro-Biafra agitators were bail-able offences

According to Ejiofor, there was no basis for both Kanu and the other defendants to still remain in prison custody since the court had in a ruling on March 1, struck out six out of eleven count charges the federal government initially slammed against them.

He maintained that going by the pending charges; they no longer posed security threat to warrant their continued detention.

Ejiofor’s argument was adopted by counsel to all the other defendants.

Justice Nyako, in her pronouncement, also deferred to rule on the separate bail applications by, Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi – the three pro-Biafra agitators who are facing trial with Kanu.
