Benin Republic mutineer leader on the run

Authorities in the Benin Republic say they have successfully thwarted an attempted coup after a group of mutineers briefly seized the country’s national television station early Sunday morning.

According to government reports, Colonel Pascal Tigri, identified as the leader of the group behind the mutiny, is currently on the run. Several other members of the faction have been arrested following a swift response by Benin’s defence and security forces.

Benin’s Interior Minister, Alassane Seidou, appeared on national television to confirm the situation, emphasizing that the attempted overthrow had been decisively contained.

“Early on Sunday morning, 7 December 2025, a small group of soldiers launched a mutiny aimed at destabilising the state and its institutions,” Seidou announced.

“Faced with this situation, the Beninese armed forces and their leadership, true to their oath, remained committed to the republic. Their response allowed them to retain control of the situation and foil the attempt.”

“The government therefore urges the population to go about their activities as normal.”

The attempted coup comes amid broader regional concerns over political instability in parts of West Africa, where several nations have experienced military takeovers in recent years. Benin, however, has largely been seen as politically stable.

Security has been heightened in strategic areas across Cotonou as the search for Colonel Tigri continues. Authorities have not yet disclosed details about the motives behind the mutiny or the number of individuals detained.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining order and constitutional governance.
