APC Slams Makinde Over “Violent Rhetoric,” Calls Him Unfit for Office
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly condemned Seyi Makinde over comments it described as inciting violence, declaring the Oyo State governor “unworthy” of the office he occupies.
In a press statement issued on April 26, 2026, and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party accused Makinde of invoking the violent legacy of Operation Wetie during a political summit in Ibadan to stoke unrest.
The APC described the governor’s remarks as “reckless” and a threat to national peace and security, stressing that such rhetoric from a sitting governor—who holds constitutional responsibility as chief security officer of his state—is deeply troubling.
According to the statement, Makinde’s comments go beyond typical opposition criticism and risk fueling “anarchy, murderous rage and widespread lawlessness.” The party called on security and intelligence agencies to take the matter seriously and act to protect lives, property, and Nigeria’s democratic order.
The APC further warned that constitutional immunity does not shield any public official from accountability in matters concerning national security, insisting that no individual should endanger citizens under the guise of political expression.
Beyond the criticism of Makinde, the ruling party dismissed claims by opposition figures that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state, attributing opposition challenges to internal crises and leadership failures.
The statement took aim at key opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accusing them of poor internal management, factional disputes, and lack of coherent policy alternatives.
It also referenced figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi in its critique of opposition dynamics.
Reaffirming its position, the APC stated that Nigeria’s democratic space remains robust, citing the presence of multiple registered political parties and active electoral participation. The party expressed confidence in its leadership under Bola Ahmed Tinubu, pledging continued commitment to democratic governance, rule of law, and its policy agenda ahead of the 2027 general elections.
