APC Convention: Yilwatda, Basiru Re-Emerge as National Chairman, Secretary

Nentawe Yilwatda and Ajibola Basiru have been re-elected as National Chairman and National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), respectively, following the party’s fourth elective national convention.

The convention, held on Friday at Eagle Square, brought together key stakeholders of the ruling party, including governors, lawmakers, party leaders, and delegates from across the country.

The re-election of Yilwatda and Basiru was announced by the convention’s election committee, which disclosed that they emerged through a consensus arrangement—an approach widely adopted by the party to ensure unity and avoid internal contests for key leadership positions.

Their return signals continuity in the leadership structure of the APC at a time the party is consolidating its internal framework ahead of future political engagements. Party insiders say the consensus model reflects ongoing efforts by the leadership to maintain cohesion and strengthen party stability after months of consultations among stakeholders.

Other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) were also returned through similar consensus agreements, underscoring the party’s preference for negotiated outcomes over competitive voting in strategic positions.

The convention is seen as a crucial moment for the APC as it seeks to reposition itself, deepen internal democracy, and reinforce its dominance in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
