APC Asks INEC To Enforce Supreme Court Judgment On Party Membership Registers

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enforce a September 24, 2026, Supreme Court judgment requiring political parties to comply with statutory provisions on membership registers ahead of primaries, congresses and conventions.

The party said the judgment in INEC v. Zenith Labour Party reaffirmed Section 77 of the Electoral Act 2026, which requires political parties to submit their membership registers to INEC at least 21 days before conducting internal electoral activities.

The APC made the request in a letter dated October 9, 2026, addressed to the INEC chairman and signed by its National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, and National Secretary, Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru.

According to the party, the judgment provides that only members whose names appear in the duly submitted membership register are eligible to vote or be voted for during party primaries, congresses and conventions.

The APC called on INEC to verify compliance with the statutory requirements by all political parties and apply the appropriate legal consequences wherever violations are established.

It urged the electoral commission to enforce the provisions without fear or favour, stressing that compliance with the law was essential to ensuring transparency and credibility in the electoral process.

With preparations for the 2027 general elections gathering momentum, the ruling party said credible elections must be supported by transparent internal party democracy and strict adherence to the rule of law.

The APC therefore urged INEC to act promptly on the Supreme Court judgment to ensure that political parties comply with the legal requirements governing their internal electoral processes.

The statement was signed by Felix Morka, the APC National Publicity Secretary, in Abuja on Friday, October 9, 2026.
