Afriland Towers Fire: United Capital Confirms Six More Deaths, Total Fatalities Now 10

The death toll from the devastating fire at Afriland Towers has risen to ten, following confirmation from United Capital Plc that six of its employees died in the incident.
The tragic update comes just hours after the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) disclosed the loss of four staff members in the same fire, which broke out Tuesday at the six-storey commercial complex on Broad Street, Lagos Island.
United Capital, an investment and financial services company operating on the 3rd and 4th floors of the building, released a statement Thursday morning mourning the loss of its colleagues.
“It is with profound grief that the Management and Staff of United Capital Plc announce the passing of six of our dear colleagues, following the tragic fire at Afriland Towers,” the company said. “Their painful loss leaves an immeasurable void. We extend our deepest condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones.”
The company, a member of Heirs Holdings founded by UBA Chairman Tony Elumelu, also noted that preparations are underway for a memorial service to honour the deceased.
The fire, reportedly sparked by an inverter explosion, led to frantic rescue efforts by emergency responders, who evacuated several occupants from the building. However, eyewitnesses and internal sources had warned early on that “not everyone made it out alive.”
Authorities have yet to issue an official casualty figure, but the confirmed deaths from FIRS and United Capital bring the known total to ten.
United Capital also thanked emergency services and all who assisted during the blaze, acknowledging their efforts amidst the chaos.
“In this moment of untold grief, we stand together in solidarity,” the company added. “May the souls of the departed rest in peace.”
