Adesanya-Davies Mourns General Rabe Abubakar, Calls for Renewed Fight Against Insecurity
Former presidential candidate, peace advocate and clergywoman, Bishop Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, the former Director of Defence Information, who reportedly died while in captivity after being abducted in Katsina State.
In a statement issued on Friday in Port Harcourt, Adesanya-Davies described the development as painful, heartbreaking and deeply troubling, extending her condolences to the family of the late military officer, the Government and people of Katsina State, members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and Nigerians grieving the loss.
According to reports, the retired senior military officer died while being held by bandits despite efforts by government authorities and security agencies to secure his release.
Reacting to the incident, Adesanya-Davies said the death of the former military spokesman was a sobering reminder of the persistent security challenges confronting the nation.
“I mourn the passing of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a man who dedicated significant years of service to the defence and security of our nation. His death in captivity is painful and a sobering reminder that insecurity remains a challenge requiring urgent and sustained action,” she said.
She noted that the tragedy had once again drawn national attention to the devastating impact of kidnapping, criminal violence and insecurity on families and communities across the country.
“This tragedy goes beyond one family. It speaks to the fears and realities experienced by countless Nigerians who continue to live under the threat of abduction, violence and uncertainty. Every life lost weakens the social fabric of our nation,” she stated.
Adesanya-Davies called for stronger collaboration among federal and state governments, security agencies, local communities, traditional institutions and civil society organisations to enhance intelligence gathering, prevention efforts, lawful enforcement and support for victims of insecurity.
She also advocated renewed investment in community protection initiatives, improved welfare packages for security personnel and the strengthening of mechanisms aimed at safeguarding vulnerable communities.
While sympathising with the bereaved family, she urged Nigerians not to lose hope but to continue supporting legitimate efforts geared towards restoring peace and public safety.
“This difficult moment should strengthen our collective determination to protect lives, defend human dignity and build a nation where citizens can travel, live and work without fear,” she added.
The former presidential candidate prayed for divine comfort for the family of the deceased and healing for victims of insecurity across the country, while calling for national unity and renewed commitment to peace, justice and the sanctity of human life.
