Adesanya-Davies Backs Call to Upgrade Onira of Ira to First Class Status
Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, a former presidential candidate and Princess of Ira in Kwara State, has thrown her weight behind a growing appeal urging Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to upgrade the Onira of Ira from a Second Class to a First Class traditional ruler.
The appeal, contained in an open letter submitted by indigenes of Ira in Oyun Local Government Area, highlights what community stakeholders describe as a longstanding imbalance in the recognition of the traditional institution.
Signed by Dr. Olarinoye S.B. on behalf of the community, the letter notes that the Onira of Ira has served for nearly three decades as a Second Class Oba, earning respect for sustained leadership, peaceful coexistence, and contributions to the socio-cultural growth of the area.
The petition also underscores the monarch’s prominent role within the Oyun Traditional Council, where he is ranked second only to the Elerin of Erin-Ile—an indication, according to the community, of the stool’s historical significance and influence.
Backing the appeal, Adesanya-Davies described the request as “a legitimate call for fairness, equity, and historical justice,” urging the state government to give it prompt and thoughtful consideration.
She further commended Governor AbdulRazaq’s administration for its commitment to inclusive governance and balanced reforms in traditional institutions, noting that granting the request would reinforce these principles.
“The elevation of deserving traditional institutions strengthens unity, preserves heritage, and promotes grassroots development,” she said.
Community stakeholders expressed optimism that upgrading the Onira of Ira would restore dignity to the people, enhance traditional representation, and deepen socio-political inclusion within the state.
They also voiced confidence in the governor’s leadership and responsiveness, calling for swift action to address the long-standing demand.
