Abbas administers oath to three newly elected House members

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, on Tuesday administered the oath of office to three newly elected members who emerged victorious in the August 16, 2025 bye-elections.

The trio are among five lawmakers elected to fill vacant seats in the Green Chamber, following the deaths of four members and the nomination of Dennis Idahosa as the running mate to Senator Monday Okpebholo in the 2024 Edo governorship election.

The House had lost four members in 2024—Ekene Adams (Kaduna), Isa Dogonyaro (Jigawa), and Olaide Akinremi (Oyo)—to illness, while Oriyomi Onanuga passed away in 2025.

To fill the resulting vacancies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted bye-elections across the affected constituencies in August. The All Progressives Congress (APC) won four of the five contests, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clinched one seat.

The lawmakers sworn in on Tuesday include Omosede Igbinedion (Ovia South-West/Ovia North-East Federal Constituency, Edo State), Joseph Bagudu (Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Kaduna State), and Mukhtar Rabiu (Garki/Babura Federal Constituency, Jigawa State).

However, Elegbeji Ayola, who won the Sagamu/Ikenne/Remo North Federal Constituency seat in Ogun State, and Oyekunle Sunday, who won the Ibadan North seat in Oyo State, were absent from the ceremony.

Of the five newly elected lawmakers, Oyekunle Sunday is the only one from the PDP.
