World handicraft day: Runsewe laments Nigeria’s poor attitude to international events.

The Director General of the National Council For Arts and Culture . Otunba Segun Runsewe has lamented that the non-challant attitude of Nigeria towards international events is dangerous to nation’s development.

Runsewe stated this at the world Handicrafts Day at the (NCAC) Headquarters in Abuja.

The world Handicrafts Day is celebrated every 10- 17 of June and was a way of awakening the consciousness of the people towards the development of Handicrafts in the world.

There are so many Handicrafts indigenous to different parts of the country as exhibited in the council, most which are going into extinction.

Crafts like leather ,shoes, bags, baskets ,Tye and dye, ,beads and pottery are all means of making a living.

According to Runsewe, “This is the sector that will save the country. Handicrafts are decorative objects produced with small tools usually by hand . It presents the culture and tradition of a country.”

He pointed out that,  “the Chinese through the coconut crafting have made a whole lot of difference , they make six million dollars annually from coconut alone and the coconut in China is a child’s play compared to what Nigeria has in Badagry.”

“Celebrating an event like the world Handicrafts Day is timely as the menace of youth restiveness, kidnapping and other social vices in the land can be addressed through handcraft development if given prompt attention.”

He explained that social media is a tool that can be used to develop this sector.

He, however, condemned in totality the character of Nigeria internet personality and cross dresser , Okuneye Idris Olarenwaju popularly known as Bobrisky ,whose dress sense totally negates the true Nigerian culture  which is respected and admired all over the world.

“It is a bad signal to the world and a totally false representation of the Nigerian identity and must be put in check.”
