We will eliminate quack teachers in our schools from January 2020- TRCN Registrar

ABIODUN JIMOH, ABEOKUTA
As part of measures to sanitise the teaching profession in Nigeria, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), has vowed to kick ouut non-registered and unlicensed teachers from classrooms effective from January 1st, 2020.
This action is aimed at repositioning the profession, and to eliminate about 500,000 quacks and unqualified teachers away from teaching pupils and students regarded as the leaders of this nation in the near future.
Registrar and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TRCN, Professor Josiah Ajiboye stated this in chat with Daily Dispatch at
the 4th Graduation/Induction ceremony of Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) program; Bachelor of Education (B.Ed), and Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) graduands into the teaching profession, held at Federal College of Education (FCE), Osiele Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, recently.
Professor Ajiboye, who personally attended the induction of 309 graduands noted that this has been part of the challenges being faced by the Council over the years. He added that their action has the backing of the National Council on Education guideline for any teacher who want to continually be in the teaching profession to register with TRCN.
Speaking further, he said: “As for the challenges facing the Council, We thank God, yes there will always be challenges, but we are surmounting them and we can assure Nigerians that gradually, we will get over them completely.
“Our position is that the National Council on Education has given a deadline of December 31, 2019 to anyone who wants to teach in Nigeria to get qualified, registered and licensed by TRCN.
“TRCN has set up a monitoring mechanism to commence on January 1st, 2020 for the enforcement of that policy decision. Anyone who fails to do so before the deadline, will no longer be allowed to practice as a teacher in Nigeria.
“Anyone operating after that deadline of December 31, 2019 is a quack. Such teachers will be sent out of the classrooms, and be dealt with accordingly based on the mandates and the law establishing TRCN
“So if you are not a registered teacher, begin to prepare your loads, because by January 2020 when we are going to start the enforcement, people will begin to know the importance of registering as a professional teachers.”
In another development, Professor Ajiboye hereby commended the management of FCE, Abeokuta for its academic excellence in the running of the programme for teachers.
“The College is reputed to be of excellence and they have not disappointed in the quality of teachers they produced. And we are very proud of the activities of the College and that is why I am also here personally to attest to the credibility of this programme.
“Also, to declare that those programmes, especially the Professional Diploma in Education (PDE), is a sound programme, and is of good quality that can stand the test of time anywhere. The teachers that have been produced through this programme are excellent teachers, and I know that they will go out and transform the society,” he stressed.
