VP Shettima highlights marriage as pillar of national development at SGF’s son’s wedding in Makurdi

Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima has described marital unions as fundamental to Nigeria’s social fabric and long-term national development, emphasizing that strong families contribute directly to national cohesion, stability, and progress.

Stanley Nkwocha Senior Special Assistant to The President on Media & Communications (Office of the Vice President), stated this in a statement on Sunday.

Speaking on Sunday in Makurdi, Benue State, where he represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the wedding of Miss Deborah Ershima and Mr. Samuel Aondoakur, son of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, VP Shettima said marriage is not merely a personal milestone but a social institution that nurtures essential values.

“There are moments in life an event quietly writes itself into memory. Today is one of those moments. We have come together not merely to witness a wedding, but to stand at the intersection of two stories choosing to become one,” he said.

The Vice President lauded the families for raising disciplined, faith-driven children and emphasized that strong marriages thrive on patience, humility, and everyday choices like listening, forgiveness, and mutual support. “A home is not built by vows alone. It is built by everyday choices. These are the quiet strengths that keep marriages standing long after the celebration ends,” he added.

VP Shettima further linked the resilience of Nigerian families to the broader capacity of the nation to overcome challenges, urging society to support married couples with counsel and goodwill rather than undue pressure. He prayed for the couple’s happiness and unity, wishing that their love continues to deepen over time.

In his remarks, SGF Senator George Akume praised President Tinubu for his leadership since May 2023 and expressed gratitude for the Vice President’s attendance despite his busy schedule. Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State also congratulated the couple and commended the federal leadership for efforts to reposition the country.

The wedding was attended by top government officials, including Ministers Joseph Terlumun Utsev, Zephaniah Bitrus Jisalo, and Idi Mukhtar Maiha, Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment Mr. Silas Agara, as well as members of the Benue State and National Assemblies.
