Vigilant NSCDC foils vandalism attempts, nabs 12 in FCT during sallah festivities
In a proactive effort to safeguard public infrastructure during the Sallah holiday, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) apprehended 12 individuals suspected of vandalizing critical assets across various locations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday in Abuja, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, FCT Commandant of the NSCDC, credited the arrests to the swift action of the Tactical Squad of the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure unit, which was deployed on heightened patrol throughout the celebration period.
The suspects, whose ages range from 20 to 55, were allegedly caught with various items believed to be stolen, including armoured cables, parts of telecom masts, galvanized iron rods, billboards, and tools such as shovels, daggers, and an axe. Those arrested include Istifani Stephen (43), Samson Danladi (29), Yakubu Thankgod (35), Barnabas Sobok (25), Zayyanu Muhammad (21), Sani Wakili (55), Usman Dankastina (38), Abdulahi Saidu (31), Ibrahim Haruna (32), Sambo Abraham (34), Umar Suleiman, and Musa Ibrahim (20).
Odumosu expressed concern over the increasing trend of criminals exploiting public holidays to commit acts of vandalism, despite government efforts to improve infrastructure. “It is unfortunate that while the Federal Government and the FCT Administration under Barrister Nyesom Wike are investing in essential facilities, some unpatriotic elements choose to destroy them for selfish gain. This cannot be allowed to continue,” he said.
He reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to protecting the FCT’s critical infrastructure, vowing that the Command will not relent in its duty to defend public property — from telecommunication installations and manhole covers to pipelines and signage.
“We are prepared to work in all conditions to fulfill our duty. Vandalism is not a petty crime — it’s sabotage. Those caught will face the full force of the law,” Odumosu stated firmly.
He also called on FCT residents to support the Corps by providing timely intelligence, emphasizing that community collaboration is essential in deterring sabotage and ensuring the safety and functionality of infrastructure that benefits all.
