To mark 500 days of El-Zakzaky’s detention, Shiites take to the streets of Abuja
Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) on Wednesday, April 26, occupied the streets of Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city.
The protesters led by the former social media director of the Peoples Democratic Party and convener of the Concerned Nigerians Deji Adeyanju protested the prolonged detention of leader Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.
The supporters in their hundred marched from the Unity Fountain in Abuja to the entrance of the Presidential Villa.
They chanted: “FG it is 500 days”, “Release our leader”, “Release his wife”, “Release our members or charge them to court”.
Speaking on the matter the leader of the protesting group Adeyanju said: “The government cannot decide what religion the people should practice.”
One of the protesters who spoke to NAIJ.com said: “We are asking that our leader should be released without a condition like Nnamdi Kanu. We want to total freedom. El-Zakzaky needs a doctor. We know federal government is not taking care of him.”
El-Zakzaky was arrested by Nigerian security operatives after the December 5, clash between members of the IMN and the troops attached to the convoy of the chief of army staff Tukur Buratai in Zaria, Kaduna state.
