Tinubu Vows Stronger Security Push, Seeks Global Support to Protect Nigerians
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to tackle insecurity across the country, declaring that efforts to support vulnerable citizens will not be undermined by rising security challenges.
Speaking on Sunday in Lagos while hosting Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 state governors for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration, the President said security remained a top priority in his recent engagements abroad, particularly during his state visit to the United Kingdom.
Tinubu disclosed that discussions with international partners focused on securing modern equipment and strengthening cooperation to combat threats. He revealed ongoing collaboration with Emmanuel Macron, noting that France had expressed readiness to support Nigeria with security infrastructure.
“Insecurity is an enemy of development, progress and prosperity,” the President said, adding that his administration is expanding global partnerships to enhance Nigeria’s security architecture.
The President, who recently met with Keir Starmer during his visit, also highlighted the broader implications of global tensions, warning that the crisis in the Middle East could worsen inflation and reduce citizens’ purchasing power.
He urged state governors to implement policies that directly ease the burden on citizens, including measures to cushion the impact of rising energy and transportation costs. Tinubu also called for stronger collaboration between federal and state governments in confronting criminal activities nationwide.
The President commended Vice President Shettima for his condolence visit to Borno State and assured residents of enhanced protection through the deployment of new security technologies.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, praised the President’s leadership and the outcomes of the UK visit, describing it as a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations.
AbdulRazaq noted that governors remain committed to addressing insecurity, revealing that discussions on the establishment of state police are ongoing, with plans to present a legislative framework to the National Assembly.
The meeting was attended by governors from across the federation, reflecting a unified front in addressing the country’s security and economic challenges.
