Tinubu to Swear in Newly Appointed IGP, Tunji Disu on Wednesday
The Nigeria Police Council has approved the appointment of Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu set to formally swear him in on Wednesday.
Disu’s confirmation by the Senate is expected on Tuesday, clearing the final hurdle before his inauguration, which will take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House.
The decision was reached on Monday during a meeting of the Police Council chaired by Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Hashimu Argungu.
Other top government officials present included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike; and Head of Service, Esther Didi Walson-Jack.
Disu’s emergence follows the resignation of former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.
Several governors and officials at the meeting praised the incoming police chief. Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, highlighted Disu’s performance as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, noting that his leadership between 2015 and 2021 earned widespread recognition for effective crime control.
Similarly, Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, described the appointment as well-deserved, citing Disu’s distinguished service record.
Wike also commended Disu’s track record, recalling his role in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and head of the anti-kidnapping unit. He further praised Disu’s impact as Commissioner of Police in the FCT, particularly in tackling security challenges.
Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, supported the Council’s decision, seconding the motion for Disu’s endorsement.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent. Over the years, he has built a strong professional profile with training in public administration, criminology, forensic investigation, and legal psychology.
Before his appointment, he served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force CID Annex in Lagos, bringing decades of operational and strategic policing experience to his new role.
