Tinubu Pays Tribute to Chief Bisi Akande at 87
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid a glowing tribute to elder statesman and former Osun State governor, Chief Bisi Akande, as he marks his 87th birthday, praising his lifelong commitment to democracy, good governance and the progressive movement in Nigeria.
In a State House statement on Thursday, President Tinubu described Chief Akande, a former interim chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as a foundational figure whose leadership and integrity helped shape Nigeria’s democratic journey and the emergence of the ruling party.
The President noted that Chief Akande, inspired by the political philosophy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, began his career as an accountant with British Petroleum before dedicating his life to public service. His political career, Tinubu recalled, spanned key roles including Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State in 1979, Deputy Governor during the Second Republic, and Governor of Osun State from 1999 to 2003.
According to Tinubu, Akande’s role as interim chairman of the APC was pivotal to the party’s historic victory in 2015, when it became the first opposition party to defeat an incumbent federal government in Nigeria.
“We must thank Baba for his leadership, industry, hard work, wisdom and labour of love for our party and country,” the President said, adding that Akande’s contributions to Osun State, the nation and the progressive movement remain enduring.
President Tinubu further described Chief Akande as a mentor and moral compass, admired for his honesty, uprightness and unwavering belief in democratic values. He acknowledged Akande’s personal support, advice and encouragement, which he said played a significant role in his own political journey to the presidency.
The President also commended the elder statesman’s continued support for the current administration and the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that Akande remains an active advocate for democracy, social justice and good governance even at 87.
“As he marks his 87th birthday, I pray for good health and renewed strength for Chief Akande,” Tinubu said.
Chief Bisi Akande is widely regarded as one of the leading figures of Nigeria’s progressive politics, with decades of service marked by discipline, ideological consistency and dedication to public service.
