Tinubu hints at political alliance as he applauds Wike’s leadership

President Bola Tinubu has signaled a potential political realignment by extending an open invitation to Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to formally join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Wike, a prominent figure in the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has been serving in Tinubu’s cabinet since 2023, sparking continued speculation about his political loyalties.

Speaking at the inauguration of Shehu Shagari Way—linking Nnamdi Azikiwe Way to Wole Soyinka Way in Maitama District—on June 11, President Tinubu acknowledged Wike’s non-membership in the APC but noted that the door remains open.

“He is not yet a member of my party,” Tinubu said. “But the day he changes his mind and registers with the Progressives, we will welcome him. We’ll even enjoy him singing, ‘as e dey pain dem, e dey sweet us.’”

This public endorsement comes as Wike continues to play a pivotal role in the capital’s infrastructural development under Tinubu’s administration. The President praised Wike’s collaborative spirit and effectiveness, describing him as a model team player in governance.

“You have shown that leadership thrives on cooperation,” Tinubu said, highlighting the synergy between Wike and other stakeholders involved in the road project.

The President also acknowledged the critical support from traditional rulers and affected local communities during the project’s implementation. He commended the peaceful relocation process and fair compensation provided by the FCT ministry.

“The government has done its part,” Tinubu added. “Now, it’s up to the people to protect and make good use of this infrastructure.”

The event was not just about a road launch—it also underscored the evolving political dynamics and possible realignments ahead of future elections, with Tinubu openly courting a key figure from the opposition.
