Tinubu Hails Nigerian Creativity, Assures of Economic Recovery at London Art Exhibition

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has applauded the resilience and creative ingenuity of Nigerians, describing their contributions to modern art as a powerful reflection of the nation’s enduring spirit.

Speaking at a reception held at Tate Modern in London on Thursday, the President commended Nigerian artists for transforming historical narratives into contemporary expressions that resonate globally.

The event, organised by the British Government as part of activities marking his state visit, celebrated Nigeria’s modern art movement and its growing influence. Tinubu noted that the exhibition’s theme, “Nigeria’s Modernism,” represents more than artistic expression, describing it as a symbol of cultural revolution led by visionary Nigerians who redefined their identity in the mid-20th century.

He praised the fusion of traditional and modern elements in Nigerian art, saying it has produced timeless works that continue to inspire across generations.

Beyond the arts, the President expressed optimism about Nigeria’s economic trajectory, stating that the country has emerged from a period of uncertainty and is now on a path toward growth and stability. He urged stakeholders not to dwell on negative economic narratives, emphasizing his confidence in Nigerians’ ability to succeed both at home and abroad.

The United Kingdom’s Deputy Prime Minister, David Lammy, who hosted the reception, highlighted the strong bilateral ties between Nigeria and the UK. He disclosed that annual trade between both countries has reached £8.1 billion, with over 500,000 Nigerians contributing significantly to Britain’s cultural and economic landscape.

Lammy also underscored Nigeria’s global cultural impact, particularly in the arts and entertainment sectors, while reaffirming the UK’s commitment to deepening trade and investment relations with Nigeria.

Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who moderated the session, spotlighted the achievements of Nigerians excelling in key positions across the UK.

The event was attended by several top Nigerian officials, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and other cabinet members and senior government figures.
