Tinubu Expands CNG Initiative to Include Electric Vehicles

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) to incorporate electric vehicles, marking a major step in Nigeria’s transition to clean energy transportation.

Following the approval, the programme will now operate as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV), serving as the central body coordinating the country’s clean mobility strategy.

The expanded initiative will oversee both gas-powered and electric vehicle adoption nationwide. It will continue the deployment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure, including Mother and Daughter Stations, Integrated Refuelling Units, CNG vehicles, and conversion programmes.

At the same time, the agency will lead the development and rollout of electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, and related investments across the country.

President Tinubu has also directed the leadership of PiCNG & EV to immediately establish a coordinated framework for the rapid distribution of vehicle conversion kits nationwide, ensuring affordability and accessibility for Nigerians.

To support this, the initiative is expected to partner with CreditCorp Nigeria, financial institutions, and other stakeholders to develop flexible financing models that will enable more citizens to convert their vehicles.

In addition, the President ordered the accelerated rollout of Mobile Refuelling Units (MRUs) to expand access to CNG infrastructure in the short term.

The move is part of broader efforts by the federal government to reduce reliance on petrol, cut transportation costs, and promote cleaner, more sustainable energy alternatives.
