Tinubu Declares 2027 Re-Election Bid, Blames Critics for ‘Weaponising Insecurity’
President Bola Tinubu has announced his intention to seek re-election in 2027, pushing back against critics whom he accused of exploiting Nigeria’s security challenges for political gain.
Speaking during a meeting with Caleb Mutfwang and other stakeholders from Plateau State, Tinubu alleged that certain actors were deliberately amplifying insecurity to weaken his administration and advance the interests of his political opponents.
“You are playing to the hand of agents, including my own enemies, who want to use insecurity to get rid of me,” the president said. He added that he remained undeterred by the criticism, describing himself as resolute in the face of mounting pressure.
“I’m a very stubborn politician. I just refuse to go. And I will campaign for my second term,” Tinubu declared.
The president’s remarks come at a time of growing concern over persistent security threats across the country, including attacks by armed groups, kidnappings, and killings in several states. Opposition figures and civil society organisations have intensified calls for stronger and more decisive action from the Federal Government.
Despite the criticism, Tinubu has repeatedly defended his administration’s handling of security, insisting that security agencies are receiving the necessary support to restore peace and stability nationwide.
Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023, is constitutionally eligible to contest for a second four-year term in the 2027 general elections.
