Tinubu Charges Acting IGP Disu to Rebuild Security, Assures Full Backing
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to take decisive steps toward restoring peace and strengthening security across the country, pledging him unwavering presidential support.
The charge was given on Wednesday during Disu’s decoration ceremony at the State House in Abuja, following the retirement of Kayode Egbetokun.
Disu’s appointment remains subject to ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate, with the council expected to convene next week.
Speaking at the event, Tinubu said Disu’s selection was based on his proven track record and past performance, particularly during his service in Lagos when Tinubu served as governor. He noted that the appointment comes at a critical time when Nigeria faces complex security challenges.
The President urged the new police chief to demonstrate firm but fair leadership, uphold professionalism within the force, and prioritise the protection of lives and property.
He also stressed the importance of rebuilding public trust in the police through effective collaboration with other security agencies.
Tinubu linked Disu’s mandate to his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing confidence in his ability to confront issues such as banditry, terrorism, and other forms of criminality through strategic thinking and innovation.
Reaffirming his commitment to supporting the Acting IGP, the President said the task ahead, though challenging, was achievable with dedication and strong leadership.
Tinubu also commended outgoing IGP Egbetokun for his service, describing his tenure as valuable to maintaining law and order.
He encouraged him to continue contributing his experience in an advisory capacity and wished him success in his future endeavours.
The ceremony was attended by key government officials, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, alongside other dignitaries and members of Disu’s family.
