Tinubu Celebrates Obasanjo at 89, Praises His Enduring Legacy
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 89th birthday, describing him as a towering statesman whose influence transcends Nigeria and the African continent.
In a State House press release issued on Wednesday, the President commended Obasanjo’s decades of service to the nation, highlighting his leadership roles both as a military Head of State between 1976 and 1979 and later as Nigeria’s civilian president from 1999 to 2007.
Tinubu noted that Obasanjo demonstrated courage and commitment to national unity, recalling his role in the civil war and his historic decision to hand over power to a civilian administration in 1979. He also acknowledged the former leader’s sacrifices, including his time in prison for opposing authoritarian rule.
The President further praised Obasanjo’s continued contributions to governance and development through his writings and regular interventions in national and continental issues, describing them as reflections of deep patriotism and dedication to nation-building.
As the elder statesman marks his 89th birthday on March 5, Tinubu offered prayers for his continued good health, strength, and wisdom, expressing hope that he will remain a guiding voice for Nigeria and humanity at large.
The statement was signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
