Tinubu Celebrates Literary Icon Femi Osofisan on 80th Birthday
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to renowned playwright, scholar and author, Professor Femi Osofisan, as the literary icon marks his 80th birthday on June 16.
In a congratulatory message, the President described Osofisan as one of the exceptionally gifted individuals who have enriched society through the full expression of their talents and creativity.
Tinubu hailed the emeritus professor as a playwright, poet, novelist, teacher, scholar and newspaper columnist whose works have consistently confronted societal challenges while advocating moral rebirth and national renewal.
According to the President, Osofisan dedicated his life to addressing societal ills through literature and theatre, using his writings to inspire reflection and promote positive change.
The President also highlighted some of the celebrated academic’s achievements, noting that his novella, Maami, was adapted into a Nigerian drama film produced and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Tunde Kelani in 2011.
Born in Erunwon, Ogun State, Osofisan attended Government College, Ibadan, before studying French at the University of Ibadan. He later proceeded to the Sorbonne in Paris for graduate studies and went on to serve in various academic positions at the University of Ibadan, where he retired as a full professor.
Tinubu further recalled that Osofisan’s contributions to theatre earned him the prestigious Thalia Prize from the International Association of Theatre Critics in 2016.
“I warmly congratulate this literary colossus as he turns 80. His life and accomplishments are a demonstration of service, dedication and hard work,” the President said.
He praised Osofisan’s immense contributions to scholarship and theatre arts, describing him as “one of our nation’s finest minds” whose advocacy for national rebirth has remained steadfast over the years.
As the celebrated scholar marks the milestone, Tinubu joined Osofisan’s family, friends and the literary community in wishing him good health and many more years of wisdom and service to humanity.
