Tinubu Celebrates Afenifere Leader Reuben Fasoranti at 100

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and Afenifere leader Reuben Fasoranti on the occasion of his 100th birthday, describing him as a symbol of integrity, principled leadership and dedicated service to Nigeria.

In a statement released on Sunday to commemorate Fasoranti’s centenary birthday on May 11, Tinubu praised the nonagenarian for his contributions to education, politics, pro-democracy activism and Yoruba unity.

The President said Fasoranti’s life represented honesty, discipline and unwavering commitment to noble causes, noting that the elder statesman distinguished himself through a “Spartan way of life” and steadfast adherence to principles.

Tinubu highlighted Fasoranti’s educational accomplishments, recalling that the Afenifere leader studied at the then University College Ibadan, now University of Ibadan, before obtaining further qualifications in the United Kingdom and Australia.

He also commended Fasoranti’s contributions to the education sector through his teaching career and establishment of schools, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School and St. Frances’ Academy in Akure.

The President further recounted Fasoranti’s political journey as a disciple of late sage Obafemi Awolowo and a member of the defunct Action Group and Unity Party of Nigeria.

Tinubu noted that Fasoranti served as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State during the administration of late Governor Adekunle Ajasin between 1979 and 1983, where his integrity and prudence helped in managing the state’s finances.

The President praised Fasoranti’s role during the military era, describing him as one of the strong voices against dictatorship and a leading figure in the struggle for the return of democracy.

According to Tinubu, Fasoranti emerged as the authentic leader of Afenifere following internal divisions within the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation after the death of Abraham Adesanya.

Tinubu also recalled the assassination attempt allegedly carried out against Fasoranti during the regime of late military ruler Sani Abacha, noting that the elder statesman remained resilient in the face of oppression and personal tragedies.

The President expressed gratitude to Fasoranti for his prayers and support throughout his political journey, especially during the 2023 presidential campaign.

Tinubu recalled visiting the elder statesman in Akure at the beginning of his campaign, where Fasoranti prayed for his victory and expressed confidence that he would live to witness Tinubu’s emergence as president.

“I thank Baba for his prayers, his belief in my vision, and his continued support for our Renewed Hope Administration. Above all, I thank Pa Fasoranti for his service to Nigeria,” the President stated.
