The sspiritual leader of Ijebus, Dr. Sikiru Adetona passes away
Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland and spiritual leader of the Ijebu people, has passed away at the age of 91.
The iconic monarch, who ruled for over 60 years, reportedly died on Sunday, July 13, 2025—just hours after the news broke of the passing of his close friend and former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari.
Ascending the throne in 1960, Oba Adetona was revered across the nation as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished and longest-reigning traditional rulers. Beyond his royal duties, he was a towering figure of cultural identity, political insight, and moral leadership.
His death signifies a profound loss, not only for the Ijebu kingdom but for the entire traditional institution in Nigeria. According to PLATFORM TIMES, his passing marks the close of a remarkable chapter in Nigeria’s royal history.
Though an official statement had yet to be released by the Ogun State Government or the palace as of press time, credible sources close to the royal family confirmed that the monarch died peacefully at a private hospital in Lagos.
