The battle for soul of the state started some years back. The drama then was like a blockbuster series……
One episode after the other……
Rivers state was literally on fire as the gladiators tried to out shine each other in a bid to win more persons/votes to themselves.
I will not bore you with the history of what transpired, but will attempt to pin point some major highlights that changed the equation for the better, for Rivers people.
The emergence of Bro Obuah Felix Amaechi as the Rivers State PDP chairman after a ruling by an Abuja High Court, led to a lot of positive changes in the Rivers PDP.
This was also the major factor why the immediate past governor had to jump ship to the APC as he knew the game was over for him.
A major blow that devastated the opposition and gave the room for the coalition of like minds to push forward the NEW agenda for a better Rivers State.
Gov Wike then started sweeping the state and swelling his grassroots ranks which culminated in the formation of the GDI, (Grassroot Democratic Initiative) amonst other notable groups that spread the message of the NEW vision for Rivers State both online and offline.
Let me also note that the fightback was massive against Gov WIKE. There was a heavy media war, aimed at de-marketing as well as to reduce his value politically. He was smeared and jeered at even by local comedians. Adverts and jingles were sponsored to paint him black both locally and internationally by all means possible. It was that bad!!!!!!
All these did not stop the Gov, neither did it deter him. He knew that to achieve his aim, He had to endure setbacks, betrayals, back stabbings and all manner of mudslingings.
Today, the result is a NEW Rivers state.
The wonders performed in such a little time is alarming given the fact that resources dwindled, and the economy is recessed.
The completion rates of these projects are also another wonder, given the fact that there were times when roads were done for four years…crippling and crumbling businesses around the areas of construction.
The state was delivered from the status of the highest ranking in abandoned projects as emphasis was placed on people oriented Road projects that were abandoned.
The roads completed are legion, and would be left to be discussed another day.
But there was a time when we had so much, that the state could afford to even import brand New fighter helicopters, build monorail that have now turned to monuments, and even host lavish parties for a Nobel Laurette.
Then, contracts were awarded, but never executed, the ones that even started, were later abandoned!!!!!!
The irony of it all was, workers, whose sweat and efforts produced the resources were left with months of unpaid salaries. Pensioners were abandoned to their fate as the state literally moved on transfer to Abuja.
All these are now history, due to the resilience, hardwork and intelligence of the Wonder Working WIKE.
No wonder the Sun Publishing Limited felt it would be good if such a Man is honoured.
I join them, together with the children of Light, in saying that this man is indeed our Governor of the Year!!!!!!!
