Terrorists threaten to bomb National Assembly Complex — Lawmaker reveals
The House of Representatives has disclosed that it received a terrorist threat to bomb the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Garba Muhammad, Chairman of the Committee on Internal Security of the National Assembly, made this revelation during a public hearing in Abuja on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
The hearing was convened to deliberate on a bill proposing the establishment of a Legislative Security Directorate in the National Assembly. The proposed body would outline the qualifications and service conditions for the sergeant-at-arms and other security personnel.
Addressing the gathering, Muhammad highlighted the persistent security challenges facing the National Assembly.
“Security is crucial to all arms of government, especially the legislature, which daily accommodates legislators, staff, executive and judicial officers, citizens, organisations, protesters, and demonstrators. Due to this constant influx, criminals often try to exploit the situation for unlawful activities,” he explained.
He noted that the complex has experienced a rise in incidents such as car and motorcycle thefts, vandalism, the use of fake identity cards, unauthorized access, and petty trading, which he said gives the complex the appearance of a small marketplace.
“We have received threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly Complex and from protesters to shut it down,” Muhammad revealed. “Lawmakers also face threats from constituents and others who easily gain access to their offices without proper appointments.”
Emphasizing the urgency of addressing these concerns, the lawmaker called for the adoption of “stringent security measures” within the National Assembly and urged state houses of assembly to implement similar safety protocols.
