Sowore, Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Brother, and others released on bail

A Magistrate Court in Kuje, Abuja, has granted bail to human rights activist and SaharaReporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, along with several individuals detained during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held in the Federal Capital Territory.

Those granted bail also include Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu; his brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu; and 11 other protesters.

Presiding Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’Id issued the bail order on Friday, following the arraignment of the defendants on charges of unlawful assembly and public disturbance.

In his ruling, the magistrate granted each defendant bail in the sum of ₦500,000, with the condition that they provide a verified National Identification Number (NIN). They are also required to present three-year tax clearance certificates and submit their international passports as part of the bail requirements.

Sowore was arrested on Thursday by police operatives shortly after leaving the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Videos of the arrest circulated widely online, sparking outrage from civil society organisations and human rights advocates, who condemned the action as a renewed attempt to stifle dissent and suppress activism.
