Sokoto To Train 2, 000 Women On Skill Acquisition
The Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Committee said it would train 2000 women across the 85 districts of the state on various skills.
The Committee Chairman, Malam Lawal Maidoki, said this at the opening of the training programme that commenced in Sokoto on Tuesday for over 500 women from 30 districts of the state.
He said, “the programme is in consonance with the Islamic Development Bank’s resolution in terms of fighting poverty”.
“The Zakkat and endowment committee should be used as an instrument to fight poverty from the grassroots level and bring people above poverty level.
“So, the aim of today’s programme is to empower women using the instrument of Zakkat and endowment to eradicate poverty from the society.
“As such, we have started with over 500 women from 30 districts to be trained in 10 days and later be assisted with capital to start businesses,”
Maidoki added that the women would be trained on various skills that included food vending, tailoring and pomade making.
The state Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Alhaji Mani Maishunku, lamented the upsurge of beggars in the state.
He called on community and religious leaders to ensure that their followers who benefitted from the training and the cash assistance used them judiciously.
Earlier Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Hajiya Kulu Sifawa, commended the committee for empowering women in the state.
Sifawa assured of collaboration of the ministry with the committee and urged the beneficiaries to utilise the gesture to improve their living standard.
