Senator Orji Kalu alleges political elite behind boko haram resurgence
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents Abia North, has accused elements within Nigeria’s political elite of backing Boko Haram in a bid to destabilize President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme aired by Channels Television on Monday, the former Abia State Governor claimed that the recent resurgence of terrorist activities is not coincidental but politically driven. According to Kalu, powerful figures unhappy with the current administration are allegedly using insurgency as a strategic weapon to undermine national stability and seize political power.
“This is not just terrorism—it’s a political war,” Kalu asserted. “The people sponsoring Boko Haram aren’t necessarily after money. They’re after control. They want to bring down the system so they can take over, and that’s a dangerous path for any country.”
He went on to identify members of the political class—including former governors, influential politicians, wealthy business elites, and senior civil servants—as the likely backers of the group, suggesting their motivations stem from dissatisfaction with the current leadership.
“The same tactics used to challenge past administrations are being repeated,” Kalu said. “They’re using insecurity to fight President Tinubu, just like they did with previous presidents. It’s the same playbook, and it’s coming from within the corridors of power.”
The senator called for national unity and urged Nigerians to rise above political scheming and focus on the welfare of ordinary citizens. He emphasized that patriotism should guide political ambition—not sabotage.
“If we truly care about Nigeria, we must prioritize peace and progress. Power should not be pursued by destroying the very foundation of the nation,” he added.
