Senate Names 12 Members for Joint Committee on Electoral Amendment Act

The Senate has constituted a 12-member committee to interface with the House of Representatives on the controversial Electoral Amendment Act, following the public debate and political reactions trailing recent legislative actions.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced the composition of the committee on Tuesday during an emergency plenary session in Abuja.

The committee is expected to harmonise positions between both chambers of the National Assembly and address contentious provisions in the proposed amendment, which has generated widespread concern among stakeholders.

Among the senators named to the panel are Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Senator Tahir Monguno. Other members are expected to work closely with their counterparts in the House of Representatives to ensure a unified legislative outcome.

Akpabio said the move underscores the Senate’s commitment to due legislative process, inter-chamber cooperation and the delivery of an Electoral Act that strengthens Nigeria’s democratic framework.

The Electoral Amendment Act has remained a subject of intense national discourse, with civil society groups, professionals and political actors expressing divergent views on its implications for future elections.
