Senate Gives FG 7 Day Ultimatum to Federal Judges Salaries
Upper Chamber of the National Assembly has given the Federal Government seven-day ultimatum to pay federal judges their four months’ salary owed them.
Facts emerged on Tuesday that Federal Judges are yet to collect four months salaries despite being on first-line charge.
This decision was sequel to the point of order raised by the Senate Deputy Minority Leader, Senator Bala Ibn N’Allah at the resumption of Tuesday’s plenary.
Na’Allah told the chamber that the Federal Judges had not received salaries or any other emoluments for the past 4 months, a situation he described as “worrisome and unfortunate.”
Responding to the development, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, expressed dissatisfaction with this development.
Ekweremadu who presided over the plenary, described as unfortunate, the situation where Judges working at the Federal level would be owed salaries for months.
He, therefore, therefore, asked the Senate committees on Judiciary and Finance to intervene, by ensuring the relevant authorities clear all the outstanding arrears of the Judges before Monday, and report back to the Senate on Tuesday, 24th January, 2017.
He added that the government should not put the judges in a situation where they will be tempted to receive gratification from litigants.
Ekweremadu urged government to ensure payment of the Judges before Monday.
