Security operatives arrest suspects in deadly Yelwata attack
Authorities in Benue State have apprehended several individuals suspected to be involved in the recent deadly assault on residents of the Yelwata area in Guma Local Government.
The violent attack, which occurred last week, reportedly left numerous people dead and forced thousands to flee their homes. Gunmen believed to be herders were said to have carried out the assault, sparking outrage and concern across the state.
Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday, June 22, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, confirmed the arrests but withheld the identities of those taken into custody. He credited the breakthrough to the support of Governor Hyacinth Alia and highlighted the importance of the newly deployed security personnel sent by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to reinforce rural policing efforts.
Commissioner Emenari also issued a warning to property owners, urging landlords and hotel managers to thoroughly screen tenants and guests to help prevent criminal elements from infiltrating local communities.
The state government and security agencies continue to monitor the situation as displaced residents seek relief and justice for the victims.
